Secure Strap
Intelligent Secure Strap is a pioneering IoT technology start-up introducing intelligence, security, and safety to the logistics industry through proactive strap monitoring. Their mission is to minimize unforeseen incidents and provide peace of mind and certainty in the dynamic landscape of Canada's trucking industry. They engaged Acorn's services to design and develop their flagship product to track the tension of straps used to secure trucking cargo. This innovative smart device would enable dispatchers to verify that all straps are correctly tensioned. In the event of any loosening, the truck driver is immediately alerted, allowing them to take prompt actions to address the situation.

Industrial Design
I worked alongside the Boston Acorn engineering team and led the product design effort. Collaborating closely with the Intelligent team, we recognized the importance of the product's durability in demanding conditions and the quick setup at shipping yards.
A Robust & Lasting Design
To align with the engineering team's durable and robust mechanical solution, our design team worked to reinforce these qualities in the enclosure design. This process involved crafting a rugged and structured form factor that enhances the product's overall durability—strategically increasing the enclosure's dimensions around the hinge and latching mechanism and safeguarding these critical components from potential damage over time. A dual-injection molding process allowed the application of a durable rubber over mold, reducing the number of individual parts and adding an extra layer of protection and shock absorption to the product. Beyond physical durability, our design direction extended to ensuring the longevity of the brand integration; placing the logo within a recessed surface showcases brand identity and protects against wear and tear throughout the product's lifespan. The branding is also a visual indicator of the product's correct orientation.
Premium Materials and Finishes
Our team explored various CMF strategies, and after careful consideration with the client, we decided to adopt a bold monochromatic approach. While all product parts are black, we incorporated subtle contrasts through material finishes. A combination of glossy plastic, matte rubber, and anodized coatings on the metal components creates visual interest and depth to the overall design. The subtle differences in material finishes elevate the product's aesthetics and bring the brand identity to the forefront, an aspect important to a start-up entering the space and seeking recognition.
